The Life of Michael

Happy Hallowe'en! Michael went trick or treating for the first time tonight and he had a blast. He really seemed to enjoy seeing the other kids and was very polite at all the doors, though shy. Mommy and Michael were out for a whole hour and he just wanted to keep on going. We saw lots of great decorations and he wasn't scared at all by some of the elaborate scenes and scary creatures jumping out at him.

MIchael's costume was a bat, and he wore it to school today too. He particularly likes the headpiece part with the face on it (see the fall photo album).

After the trick or treating we had a late supper of pizza, and Michael asked for some of his candy, so he had a little chocolate bar, which he said was really good. He was up late (9pm) so it's been quite the big day for him!!

Where to begin?? Michael is doing great and picking up lots of words. A lot of it is mimicry, so we have to be careful :-) He can ask for a few of his favourite books by name now: "La La" is "Moo, Baa, La La La;" "Mimi" is "Mimi's Toes;" He says something close to "Dino" for his Dinosaur book and something between "bappy" and "puppy" for his "Playful Puppy" book. He said "turtle" and then "whale" both out of the blue in the last couple of weeks. He's really keen on animals and loves to look at pictures of them.

He's also started asking to sit and watch some special "Baby TV' programming (he points at the tv and says "Baby!") and has brought over his Baby Einstein dvds asking for them to be put on. He's finally starting to sit still for short periods of time with his toys or a show (only if it has babies or animals in it).

In general he's getting lots better at letting us know what he needs or wants.

He has three of his molars now. There may be a fourth, but he won't let us look.

We took Michael to our first Jays game of the summer yesterday and he did much better than expected. He sat relatively quietly and seemed to enjoy the action.

Michael had a big day today at daycare. They took him out to the toddler playground for the first time. He went with two of his little friends from the infant room. He kicked a ball around and pushed the shopping cart and tried to ride a tricycle. Reports are he had a great time, and he did well, so he'll get to go again. This is all part of transitioning him to the toddler room, which is a couple of months off yet I think. Maybe 6ish weeks. We'll see.

He loves playing outdoors. He'd stay out all day and night if you let him. Loves his sandbox and kicking balls around the backyard. He was digging in the dirt with Mommy on Monday. He grabbed a little stick and started digging (in an empty spot thank goodness), just like Mommy.

He is getting a little frustrating and frustrated as he's trying to do everything on his own, including feed himself, and wanting to copy everything we do. It's hard because he needs to learn, but at the same time he needs to eat, even if he can't yet get the food to his mouth.

Two more teeth are on the way. One of them cut through last week, but is taking its time now, These are the next two on either side on the bottom.

He's an offical walker now! All weekend, at any opportunity, up and away he went. He's getting steadier, and seeming to enjoy the new perspective. Walking out on the lawn is still a challenge though :-)

Michael is surprising us every day with the new things he can do. He says a number of words now -- "doggie" being his favourite (it applies to any animal still, but gets special attention when an actual dog walks by). "Nana" for "banana" gets a lot of airplay too. "Hello" and "car" are newish words, but seldom heard. "Bubba" for his bottle of course is heard a lot.

He's also starting to sign a couple of requests. He will sign "eat" if I ask him if he's hungry (and he is), and has signed "hungry" a couple of times in response the question. He occasionally will sign "eat" on his own when he sees something he wants to eat. And he's gotten pretty good at "more" when he wants more food. He can sign milk too, but usually only does it when I do. It's all about the food really.

He will nod yes and shake his head no. He can say "no" but uses the head more often.

The cutest thing is he will try to imitate the actions to "Skinamarink" when mommy sings it to him. He apparently does this at daycare too.

Michael has taken his first independent steps!! We are very excited. He's been walking with us holding on to only one hand for a couple of weeks now, but Wednesday at daycare he finally ventured out on his own to walk to one of the daycare teachers. (Not to mommy, notice - ah well!) We of course didn't see it, but trust them. We've been working on it at home since and he took two steps Wednesday night, and then this afternoon he walked from Nicholas to the back door to watch the dog outside. Guess he needed to right motivation :-) He repeated a few times, so I guess we're at the next stage now. Very proud of him!!

Well, it's official. Michael is indeed the sweetest baby in the world. He started giving mommy lots of spontaneous hugs on the weekend, but today came the spontaneous kisses. Big slobbery ones right on the mouth. So cute! It melts my heart :-)

Well, Michael has had quite the weekend. He stood on his own for the first time on Saturday. He'd been making little brief attempts for a day or so, but Daddy convinced him to give it a real go Saturday afternoon. A little wobbly still of course, but he's getting there.

And in other news - we turned his carseat around front-facing. He had his first ride this morning, and was very excited. He loved looking out the windows and watching the world go by. Lots of giggling and smiles to show how much he liked the new view. He looks so grown up sitting up straight in the back seat!

And we finally were able to get out and play in the snow. The snow was late coming, and the weather has been brutally cold, plus Mommy has been working weekends, so this was our first real chance, now that winter's almost over. Nicholas built him a snowman and threw snowballs, which he thought was a riot. Michael also got a ride in his sled around and around the garden (check out the video).

I guess we're due for an update. Michael is well into the mimicking stage now. He loves to hold the portable phone to his ear (usually backwards) and say "Hello" - or at least something approximating hello. He's working steadily on language development. He picked up his brush and tried to brush his hair the other night. And he giggled when Daddy tried to get him to brush Daddy's shaved head :-)

He's still not walking but getting stronger on his feet.

And things are looking up in the tooth department. He's got 2 on bottom and 1 on top now, plus 3 more on top that are working their way through. He likes to click his top and bottom teeth together, particularly when he's bored in his car seat. It's a particularly annoying sound, but kind of cute nonetheless.

Daycare is going great still. They moved him from his highchair to a toddler chair for his meals there, and he looks just adorable sitting up to the (very low) table like a big boy.

That's about it for now. I realised I haven't taken any pictures in ages, so I'll get on that soon to update his photo albums for anyone wanting to see how big he's gotten.

Michael has discovered the joys of walking. He's not quite there on his own yet, but he loves to walk around holding onto our hands. Last night he walked while holding only one of daddy's hands, so he's gettting close. Just needs to get a bit steadier on his feet. He's so proud of himself! And rightly so :-)

He's also blowing kisses regularly, which is so cute.

And yesterday at daycare he painted his first picture. A stunning display of abstract red ... with handprints. Very exciting for mommy to see. I can't wait to get it home on the fridge!
